Mastering Variant Complexity

Complexity Management for Embedded Systems

The development of comprehensive software systems is nowadays driven to a large extent by individual customer requirements. The deployment and maintenance of customer-specific solutions leads to increasingly complex products and a rapidly increasing number of variants and versions. Companies are increasingly faced with the challenge of how to master this complexity and how to ensure long-term evolution and adaptation of existing systems. In the seminar “Mastering Variant Complexity”, product and innovation managers, system architects, as well as systems and software engineers will learn how to address this task. Current research results of Fraunhofer IESE are part of the content being taught. This allows the participants to get an overview of the approaches and methods from the areas of complexity management, strategic reuse of software components, as well as platform and product line development. The participants will learn about the various causes and forms of complexity and how to manage and reduce them. In addition to theoretical knowledge, this English-language seminar will also teach best practice models for integrating complexity management into one’s own company and for aligning the interests of the various stakeholders. The seminar will take place at Fraunhofer IESE in Kaiserslautern from 06 to 07 November 2017 and will be complemented by one day of online learning.

The career-compatible seminar “Mastering Variant Complexity” offered by the Professional School of EIT Digital will start in July 2016.
IT topics such as embedded systems offer great growth potential for many domains. However, they are subject to rapid development and evolution and professionals always need current state-of-the-practice knowledge in these areas. The initiative “EIT Digital” intends to further strengthen Europe’s role in the area of innovative information and communication technology. In order to teach state-of-the-art research results, the Professional School of “EIT Digital” and the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE have developed the career-compatible seminar “Mastering Variant Complexity”. In this seminar, experts from Fraunhofer IESE teach technical and analytical know-how for the development of highly individualized embedded systems.

Lecturers

The seminar will be taught by experienced consultants and researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE in Kaiserslautern. Fraunhofer IESE has been working for close to 20 years in research and industry projects on the topics of Variation Management and Software Reuse and has already completed more than 30 projects with industry customers in this area.

Our product line approach (PuLSE™) is being successfully used in many domains for new developments or for the migration of existing systems. Thanks to the custom-tailored introduction of variation management, our customers have significantly decreased their development effort for new product variants and have reduced development times by up to a factor of twenty.

The researchers of Fraunhofer IESE have authored numerous publications for international conferences and scientific journals in the areas of Variation Management and Software Reuse. They regularly teach tutorials on variation management at industry customers’ sites, at conferences, as well as in the context of lectures at the University of Kaiserslautern.
