Digital twins in "Pharma 4.0"
Rene-Pascal Fischer, Fraunhofer IESE

In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, the absence of standards and effective communication among various aspects of a facility poses significant challenges. However, the concept of digital twins emerges as a highly interoperable solution that promises to bridge this gap seamlessly.

Digital twins are virtual replicas of physical assets, processes, or systems that enable digital monitoring, analysis, and optimization. By integrating data from sensors, (I)IoT devices, and other sources, digital twins provide a holistic view of a facility, allowing for better decision-making and improved operational efficiency.

One of the key advantages of digital twins lies in their ability to connect different components and stakeholders within a facility. They serve as a communication platform, enabling collaboration and information sharing across departments and even companies.

As we look towards practical applications, Germany is at the forefront of developing standards for digital twins. With the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) as an upcoming standard, the need for a unified language that ensures compatibility and facilitates seamless integration can be satisfied.
