OOP 2021

Software meets Business - The Conference for software architecture

On 08 - 12 February 2021, the OOP Conference will take place digitally for the first time, under the motto “Back to the Future”!

Experience the OOP with all its well-known & well-proven formats, practice-oriented program content, and interactive exchange, with more than 170 presentations on 5 days, 13 topic areas, up to 9 parallel tracks, many social events, workshops, graphic recordings, and much more, comfortably from your home or your home office.

Here you can find the contributions of Fraunhofer IESE:

Wednesday, 10 February 2021, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Track: Design Erosion & Learning from Failure
The new system must be able to do the same things as the old one! NO – modernizing systems correctly
Dr. Matthias Naab, Dr. Marcus Trapp, and Dr. Dominik Rost, Fraunhofer IESE

When a software system is to be modernized, one requirement often comes up like a reflex: “But the new system must be able to do the same things as the old one!” What may sound sensible at first glance makes no sense at all. Against the background of common modernization goals and typical system histories, we will explain why this is the case. This should equip all listeners with arguments to avoid making this mistake in the future. In addition, we will show stumbling blocks and best practices for planning a successful modernization.

Thursday, 11 February 2021, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Track: Product Discovery, Customer Centricity & RE
Digital business models that pay off! Rapid development of ideas for Digital Ecosystems
Dr. Marcus Trapp, Claudia Nass, and Matthias Koch, Fraunhofer IESE

Digital Ecosystems and Platform Economy are high on everyone’s agenda. The central components of Digital Ecosystems are Digital Ecosystem services, which are provided completely digitally and are therefore highly scalable. The development of these new services and the underlying digital business models is very complex and usually takes too long in practice. In this talk, we will present how this process can be accelerated while still taking into account all the criteria of a promising Digital Ecosystem service.

Eventual Consistency – You do not need to be afraid
Susanne Braun, Fraunhofer IESE

The trend towards highly scalable cloud applications that rely strongly on data-driven features continues unabated. As a result, more and more applications are only running under Eventual Consistency. However, concurrent change operations on inconsistent, replicated datasets can lead to serious replication anomalies such as lost updates. The implementation of correct merge logic in the case of write conflicts is a major source of error and a challenge even for very experienced software architects. Based on our experiences from different case studies and our ongoing research, we are developing architecture recommendations and design patterns for the design of applications running under Eventual Consistency. In parallel, we are driving the development of an open-source replication framework to support our methods. The presentation will provide concrete support to architects and will include a demo session with our open-source solution.
