  • The state of Rhineland-Palatinate is supporting the participation of the municipality of Betzdorf/Sieg (Altenkirchen County) and the municipalities of Eisenberg and Göllheim (Donnersberg County) in the scientific research project “Digital Villages” with 180,000 euros each. “This project is intended to test in practice how smart networking across all domains can help to keep life in rural areas attractive for people of all ages, and thus to accompany the demographic changes”, said the Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of the Interior, for Sports and Infrastructure, Roger Lewentz, on Monday in Mainz when the funding decision documents were presented to the mayors of the involved municipalities.

  • With its strategy BAYERN DIGITAL, the Free State of Bavaria is promoting digitalization in business and science. This includes the Zentrum Digitalisierung.Bayern (ZD.B, Bavarian Center for Digitalization). In mid-November, the cabinet of the Bavarian state government in Munich was presented with the proposals made by a commission of experts, which had been working on recommendations for the design of 20 additional state-funded chairs in the area of digitalization at Bavarian universities and universities of applied sciences since April 2015. The chairman of the independent commission staffed with experts from outside Bavaria was Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Liggesmeyer, executive director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE in Kaiserslautern.

  • The publication “Strong Economy – Strong Regions. Good Prospects for Rural Areas.” by the Rhineland-Palatinate Initiative for the Future (Zukunftsinitiative Rheinland-Pfalz (ZIRP) e.V.) offers more than 60 contributions by stakeholders from business, government, science, culture, and the church, which provide a look – the first such comprehensive one – at rural areas in Rhineland-Palatinate and their economic development opportunities. This morning it was presented to the public in Mainz.

  • In the context of a ceremony attended, among others, by Science Minister Vera Reiß, Prof. Dr. Helmut J. Schmidt officially transfers the chairmanship of the Science Alliance Kaiserslautern e.V. to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dieter Rombach, Institute Director Business Development of the Fraunhofer Institute IESE.

  • On 15 July 2015, the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE was presented by Minister President Malu Dreyer with a grant approval in the amount of 930,000 euros for the project “Digital Villages”. In two test regions, Fraunhofer IESE will test and use smart technologies for future-viable infrastructures in rural areas in the next three years.

    On 30 June 2015, the 3rd International Cluster Conference of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) took place in Berlin. In the competition for the new funding program “Internationalisation of Leading-Edge Clusters, Forward-Looking Projects, and Comparable Networks”, the Software-Cluster convinced the jury with its internationalization strategy and will receive up to four million euros in funding over the next few years.

  • With the “2015 IEEE TCSE Software Engineering Distinguished Synergy Award”, the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE has received international recognition of its achievements as an innovation driver for the economy. On behalf of the institute, Prof. Dieter Rombach will be accepting the award bestowed by the largest professional association of engineers worldwide at this year’s International Conference on Software Engineering in Florence, Italy.
