Ministerial director Inge Degen pays tribute to Fraunhofer IESE and its project “Digital Villages” as a “Landmark 2018”
With the project “Digital Villages”, the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE is one of three innovative prize winners from Rhineland-Palatinate in the contest “Landmarks in the Land of Ideas 2018”.
On the occasion of a reception at the State Chancellery in Mainz, Ministerial Director Inge Degen welcomed the three winners on 28 November 2018 and congratulated them for their exemplary commitment and their excellent achievements: “A digital twin helps people with social impairments, digital services ensure quality of life in rural areas, job seekers and migrants build furniture from commercial waste materials – the three award-winning projects from Rhineland-Palatinate address social challenges and strengthen unity. Many people, institutions, and companies are doing pioneering work in our state. They recognize problems and potential and use ingenuity to develop sustainable strategies and concepts. This benefits all of us”, said Inge Degen and congratulated the winners on behalf of the Minister President for this special award.
A top-class jury selected the “Digital Villages Platform” out of almost 1,500 submitted applications as one of 100 outstanding projects in Germany for this year’s motto “Connecting worlds – strengthening unity”. The initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas” and Deutsche Bank have been organizing this innovation contest jointly for 13 years.
In the project “Digital Villages”, Fraunhofer IESE demonstrates how digitalization opens up new opportunities for rural areas.
The project “Digital Villages” started in summer 2015 with the aim of examining the challenges of today’s life in rural areas with regard to digitalization. Since then, concepts and solutions are being developed in the project that demonstrate the opportunities of a holistic approach to the topic of digitalization in the sense of a digital ecosystem.
The project “Digital Villages”, which is being funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of the Interior and for Sport, Fraunhofer IESE, and the Rhineland-Palatinate Development Agency, is considered a pioneer for many other initiatives that have since started in Germany. In cooperation with Fraunhofer IESE, new digital services are being developed for rural areas.
Further information about the project can be found at the Digital Villages website.
