Modernizing systems correctly – Does the new system have to be able to do the same things as the old one?
Dr. Matthias Naab and Dr. Dominik Rost, Fraunhofer IESE

Systems often live for many years or even decades, are carefully maintained and patched again and again. But at some point the UI looks dusty, changes take forever, and you want to benefit from the possibilities of modern technologies. The decision is made to modernize the system. And then comes the simplest requirement in the world, which we have all heard before: “But the new system has to be able to do the same things as the old one!” That we hear this requirement so often is not surprising: It is simple, it can be formulated even if you know the system only superficially, and it seems to be precise at the same time. In fact, however, this requirement is quite nonsensical.

In this presentation, we will explain why the simplest requirement in the world is nonsense, and provide experience, guidance, and best practices for modernization projects where the goal is to design the target state and to plan the path of modernization.

The 7 anti-patterns for good architecture documentations – masterpiece or dime novel?
Dr. Matthias Naab and Dr. Dominik Rost, Fraunhofer IESE

Documentation helps us to make software architecture more precise, to communicate ideas, and to remember solution concepts even weeks later. Nevertheless, documentation is often treated in a rather neglectful way, and in our projects, we encounter great architectures much more often than great architecture documentations.

In this presentation, we will share our experiences around architecture documentation from a wide variety of systems and industries. We will summarize 7 anti-patterns and give tips on how everyone can improve their architecture documentation by simple means. Our tips are independent of the approach used and can, of course, be combined with templates like arc42.
