Annual Privacy Forum 2016: Fraunhofer IESE to present its Data Usage Control Demonstrator

On 7 and 8 September 2016, the Annual Privacy Forum (APF) 2016 will take place in Frankfurt. This year’s motto for the event is “Bringing research & policy together”. The APF is the most important event concerning the topic of privacy in Europe. Fraunhofer IESE will present its IND2UCE technology for data usage control with a demonstrator.

Modern electronic communication networks and digital services are an essential part of an ever increasing range of common supply services. In the age of electronic monitoring, digital data collection, and automated profile generation, users of such services are exposed to major threats regarding their right to privacy, informational self-determination, and data sovereignty; the same applies to companies when it comes to sensitive data and intellectual property. The lack of transparency of such services with respect to functionality, data reconciliation, and data exchange increases the risk of uncontrollable processing of personal data. In terms of regulations, this topic is addressed by the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU-GDPR).

On the operative level, technologies and business models are necessary for monitoring and controlling the usage of data in the form of processing and dissemination after access has been gained, respectively after data have been provided and made available. The INtegrated Distributed Data Usage Control Enforcement (IND2UCE) technology developed at Fraunhofer IESE is currently the most advanced technology worldwide for data usage control. It supports the technical implementation of future regulatory frameworks for informational self-determination, the right to privacy in the digital tomorrow, and data sovereignty. This was already rewarded in 2014 with the EARTO Innovation Prize.

The demonstrator of Fraunhofer IESE shows a complex scenario for the protection of personal data as well as sensitive company information in an everyday setting of the type typically found in a company. Both data from digital services and IoT objects are relevant in this scenario. For this purpose, IND²UCE has been integrated into different technologies (Mobile, Cloud). This integration makes it possible to protect data and digital services on the basis of security policies depending on the given situation.
