For developers of a (software) product, online distribution channels have made it far easier to attract thousands, even millions, of users. But how can they make sure they know what this big \u2018crowd\u2019 of users wants or expects of their product, or what problems they encounter? If they use traditional means of requirements engineering (RE), they quickly realize that the amount of information available soon becomes unmanageable.<\/p>\n

CrowdRE as the solution<\/h3>\n

In response to this problem, Fraunhofer IESE<\/a> has been at the forefront of research and application in the field of Crowd-based Requirements Engineering<\/a> (CrowdRE for short) for more than five years. This approach derives requirements from user feedback, such as texts or log data, while motivating users to provide this feedback. The approach involves many details that need to be researched or refined, which calls for researchers to collaborate across many research institutions. A crucial platform for them to connect with others and get inspired is the biannual \u201cInternational Workshop on Crowd-Based Requirements Engineering\u201d or \u201cCrowdRE Workshop\u201d.<\/p>\n

The CrowdRE\u201919 workshop<\/h3>\n

This summer, the third CrowdRE Workshop will be held on Jeju Island, South Korea. By now, the field of CrowdRE has matured to a point where the focus is on the transfer from CrowdRE research into industry practice. This includes presenting case studies, identifying and addressing hurdles associated with this process, identifying CrowdRE\u2019s potentials and limits from lessons learned, and correctly integrating CrowdRE within the software product lifecycle. Another goal is to boost creativity and promote diversity within a large crowd of users, for example by adapting methods such as design thinking for settings with mostly remote crowd interactions.<\/p>\n

History of the CrowdRE workshop<\/h3>\n

Previous editions of the CrowdRE workshop have had a tremendous impact on this domain. The first workshop, CrowdRE\u201915, united the distributed efforts on CrowdRE, facilitating more systematic research efforts in the following years and leading to a joint vision presented in the IEEE Software paper \u201cThe crowd in requirements engineering: The landscape and challenges\u201d. The second workshop, CrowdRE\u201917, explored user motivation in more depth and resulted in a roadmap for CrowdRE, with greater emphasis on shared resources. In 2018, CrowdRE was the special focal topic of the Artificial Intelligence for Requirements Engineering workshop (AIRE\u201918), which strengthened the relationship between CrowdRE and the use of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

Workshop organizers<\/h3>\n

As with previous editions of the workshop, Fraunhofer IESE plays an important part in organizing the workshop. The four co-organizers are Eduard C. \u201cEddy\u201d Groen of Fraunhofer IESE, Meira Levy of Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Art, Anas \u201cNash\u201d Mahmoud of Louisiana State University, and Norbert Seyff of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Neben beratenden T\u00e4tigkeiten in der Industrie \u00fcbernahm er u. a. leitende Funktionen in der Beratung von Bundesministerien zu digitalen Datenplattformen f\u00fcr die Landwirtschaft (BMEL), in der Weiterentwicklung der Forschung zu dynamischen Systems-of-Systems (\u00bbDynaSoS\u00ab; BMBF) sowie in Projekten im Bereich Usable Security & Privacy (\u00bbTrUSD\u00ab, \u00bbD\u2018accord\u00ab). Am Fraunhofer IESE ist er seit \u00fcber 10 Jahren Themenverantwortlicher f\u00fcr \u00bbCrowd-Based Requirements Engineering\u00ab. Neben seiner Arbeit am Fraunhofer IESE ist er beim International Requirements Engineering Board (IREB) Leiter der Special Interest Group on Sustainability. Er hat ein Master in der Psychologie von der Universit\u00e4t Twente und absolvierte 2025 seine Doktorarbeit an der Universit\u00e4t Utrecht, betreut von Prof. Dr. Sjaak Brinkkemper, Prof. Dr. Fabiano Dalpiaz und Prof. Dr.-Ing. J\u00f6rg D\u00f6rr. Als Wissenschaftler decken seine \u00fcber 25 Publikationen Themen wie Qualit\u00e4tsanforderungen, Nutzerfeedbackklassifikation, Digitale \u00d6kosysteme, gebrauchstauglicher Datenschutz, IoT und Nachhaltigkeit ab. Er ist u.a. Groen ist Senior Requirements Engineer & Projektleiter am Fraunhofer IESE und er koordiniert die Digitale Nachhaltigkeit. Seine Arbeit ist dom\u00e4nen\u00fcbergreifend und fokussiert sich auf das Digital Design komplexer Systeme (z. B. digitale \u00d6kosysteme oder das Internet of Things) und darauf, wie diese die Herausforderungen der Nachhaltigkeit bew\u00e4ltigen k\u00f6nnen. Neben beratenden T\u00e4tigkeiten in der Industrie \u00fcbernahm er u. a. leitende Funktionen in der Beratung von Bundesministerien zu digitalen Datenplattformen f\u00fcr die Landwirtschaft (BMEL), in der Weiterentwicklung der Forschung zu dynamischen Systems-of-Systems (\u00bbDynaSoS\u00ab; BMBF) sowie in Projekten im Bereich Usable Security & Privacy (\u00bbTrUSD\u00ab, \u00bbD\u2018accord\u00ab). Am Fraunhofer IESE ist er seit \u00fcber 10 Jahren Themenverantwortlicher f\u00fcr \u00bbCrowd-Based Requirements Engineering\u00ab. Neben seiner Arbeit am Fraunhofer IESE ist er beim International Requirements Engineering Board (IREB) Leiter der Special Interest Group on Sustainability. Er hat ein Master in der Psychologie von der Universit\u00e4t Twente und absolvierte 2025 seine Doktorarbeit an der Universit\u00e4t Utrecht, betreut von Prof. Dr. Sjaak Brinkkemper, Prof. Dr. Fabiano Dalpiaz und Prof. Dr.-Ing. J\u00f6rg D\u00f6rr. Als Wissenschaftler decken seine \u00fcber 25 Publikationen Themen wie Qualit\u00e4tsanforderungen, Nutzerfeedbackklassifikation, Digitale \u00d6kosysteme, gebrauchstauglicher Datenschutz, IoT und Nachhaltigkeit ab. Er ist u.a.
